Sylvia King

French Teacher

Sylvia King grew up on a farm in rural northeastern Alberta. With both parents Francophone, Sylvia was exposed to a rich French-based culture. One of her fondest memories is baking meat pies with her family for the Réveillon on Christmas Eve.

Sylvia graduated from the University of Alberta in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering. After 15 years in the oil and gas industry, she returned to school when she discovered a passion for teaching. Her educational journey took her to St. Mary's University, completing her Bachelor of Education in 2020. Following graduation, she worked at a catholic junior high school in Okotoks for two years, teaching grade 7 and 8 French immersion in science and mathematics.

Outside of school, Sylvia loves to spend time with her family. She is also very active in karate and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Sylvia is known to bake the best chocolate chip and gingersnap cookies.

Her educational philosophy is rooted in the importance of setting realistic expectations for all students. Every day, Sylvia tries to foster a positive attitude, an open mind, and high expectations for all her students. She believes in making learning an enjoyable blend of knowledge and hands-on experience. This is reflected in her enthusiasm for crafting lessons and projects inspired by real-world events and classroom topics. Since Sylvia joined the Tanbridge team, she has appreciated working in an environment with a group of teachers who strive for excellence in every aspect of a student’s life. This similar mindset and her love and passion for competition and sports have made the transition to Tanbridge an easy one.
