Nicole Mitchell
Grade 6 Humanities Teacher
Nicole Mitchell has spent over 20 years working with children and teens in schools and community support agencies. Originally from BC and raised in Calgary, Nicole’s journey brought her back to BC, where she lived, travelled internationally, and pursued post-secondary studies in social work and liberal arts. Her passion for supporting youth led her to earn a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary, solidifying her commitment to teaching and empowering young people.
Nicole teaches ELA and social studies at Tanbridge Academy. She is driven by her passion for these subjects as they allow students to explore the rich tapestry of human experiences, cultures, and ideas across history and today. She is committed to fostering curiosity and critical thinking while enhancing students' reading and writing skills. Nicole’s teaching also seeks to ignite students’ connection to their community through empathy, personal reflection, and a deeper understanding of the world. By recognizing their place within this larger context, students can better contribute toward meaningful and positive change.
Nicole values the unique talents, perspectives, identities, and abilities of every student. Her classroom is a supportive and inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated, and students are empowered to thrive. Beyond her classroom, Nicole is dedicated to strengthening the school community. Nicole co-facilitated the student spirit squad, organizing monthly school spirit days and leading initiatives that promoted goodwill both within the school and in the broader community.
In her classroom, learning is interactive and engaging. Nicole believes in the power of discussion, collaboration, and hands-on activities to enhance understanding and encourages students to participate actively in the learning process. She incorporates strategies like cooperative learning, creative projects, relationship-building, and offering students voice and choice in their learning. Nicole’s approach is centred on guiding student growth, building resilience, and fostering a love of learning. She emphasizes open communication and values strong collaboration between students, parents, and teachers as the foundation for a successful educational experience.
Outside of school, Nicole is passionate about nature and enjoys spending time in the forests and by the ocean on Vancouver Island, BC, or exploring the majestic Rocky Mountains of Alberta. An avid animal lover, she has volunteered as a dog foster mom for many years. Nicole has two children: a daughter who is a dedicated dancer, skier, and talented creative writer, and a son who is passionate about soccer, skiing, outdoor adventures, and engineering. Nicole loves camping, travelling, enjoying music, snowboarding, reading, and creating memorable adventures with her family.
